Halloween, Day after: Federal holiday proposal?
For me and my bro, Halloween is more important than Xmas. I would LOVE for the day after, Nov 1st (All saints day) was a federal holiday. Here are the benefits of making this happen, please help me add more:
-Greater adult Holiday experience, staying out/partying longer without worrying about working the next day.
-Greater childhood experience. Kids stay up later & the "day after" a holiday, spent off, adds a mood of wonderment
-Fewer DUIs, accidents & deaths. People can drink at their leisure and not knock ‘em back then rush home
-Greater Holiday=More Purchasing=More money for companies
-Greater events held by county/city, Alternative to drinking
-Parents have more time with their kids & can better keep children out of trouble, another alternative
-For those who are all "ZOMG HALLOWEEN IS FOR SATAN!" they will get a day off for All Saints Day
-Anyone who would do Halloween Mischief wouldn’t care about school/work the next day anyway. Also less infamy for TPing the principal’s house.
Where do I sign the petition?
However, I don’t believe having a national holiday the day after Halloween would lead to "[f]ewer DUIs, accidents & deaths." I am want to believe there would be more…because some people would likely drink more not less, knowing they didn’t have to go to work the next day.
Honestly, I hate to be a killjoy, but as All Saints is a Christian holiday, I don’t think you’re going to see lawmakers commit to endorsing your proposal. I’m sure the ACLU and others will sue to block such an attempt based upon the notion of the separation of church and state and them arguing that such a holiday would amount to an endorsement of religion, which I think is what this would be.
One other obstacle to your proposal, when Halloween falls on a Friday, would All Saints Day be celebrated as a national holiday on the following Monday so that people would have that day off? I don’t think that’s going to fly.
Ultimately, I like your basic idea but I don’t think you’re ever going to get a majority of federal lawmakers to support your concept. You might be able to initiate a ballot measure in your area by soliciting the support of locals, especially if Halloween is widely celebrated by the people in your city or town.
I think Nov. 1st should be a holiday too. I’m always too tired to go to school anyways.
I second the motion.
